Toch wordt een betrouwbare en betaalbare toegang tot CO\u2082 steeds moeilijker te waarborgen. WKK-installaties draaien minder uren, de industri\u00eble CO\u2082-levering staat onder druk en de kosten van geleverde vloeibare CO\u2082 stijgen continu. Voor een groep tomatentelers in Sirjansland, in de Nederlandse provincie Zeeland, was het antwoord om helemaal te stoppen met het vertrouwen op externe levering.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Het resultaat, dat nu al meer dan zes jaar operationeel is, is een van de langstlopende commerci\u00eble installaties met Galloxol\u00ae CO\u2082-afvangtechnologie \u2014 en een referentiepunt voor telers in heel Europa en daarbuiten die dezelfde vraag stellen: kunnen we onze eigen CO\u2082 ter plaatse produceren vanuit onze bestaande energie-infrastructuur?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">CO\u2082-afvang bouwen op een biomassaketel: hoe DES is ontstaan<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Het verhaal begint met warmte, niet met CO\u2082. In 2017 richtten Marc Groenewegen van South West Growers en verschillende collega-telers Duurzame Energie Sirjansland (DES) op met een helder doel: de afhankelijkheid van aardgas verminderen door warmte te genereren uit biomassa. CO\u2082-afvang kwam later in beeld, nadat duidelijk werd dat de rookgassen van de biomassacentrale een waardevolle en grotendeels onbenutte bron van biogene CO\u2082 waren.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Voor de afvangtechnologie selecteerde de groep een systeem dat was ontwikkeld door Frames \u2014 dat nu wordt voortgezet door Green Gas &amp; Liquids \u2014 en dat zijn waarde al had bewezen in toepassingen binnen de voedingsmiddelen- en drankenindustrie. De DES-installatie werd in juni 2019 geopend. Vandaag de dag wordt afgevangen CO\u2082 op de locatie opgeslagen in buffertanks en precies op het moment en in de hoeveelheid die het gewas nodig heeft aan de kas toegevoegd.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Drie voordelen die telers in de praktijk zien<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Na jaren van operatie weet Marc precies wat uit biomassaputten afkomstige CO\u2082 onderscheidt van de alternatieven.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Schonere CO\u2082, veiligere dosering.<\/strong> Meetgegevens van een eigen luchtkwaliteitssensor tonen consequent lagere NOx- en ethyleenconcentraties bij DES-CO\u2082 in vergelijking met CO\u2082 afkomstig uit WKK. Vooral voor jonge planten \u2014 die gevoelig zijn voor verhoogde NOx-gehalten \u2014 is dit van belang. Dankzij dit schonere profiel kan de teler met grotere zekerheid hogere CO\u2082-concentraties toepassen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Precisie en flexibiliteit.<\/strong> Een WKK-installatie produceert CO\u2082 als bijproduct van de elektriciteitsproductie: deze staat aan of staat uit. DES werkt op basis van modulatie, waardoor CO\u2082 kan worden gedoseerd als directe reactie op lichtintensiteit, temperatuur en vochtdeficit. South West Growers heeft deze logica geoptimaliseerd in samenwerking met hun klimaatcomputerleverancier en gaat nu door met doseren, zelfs bij verhoogde temperaturen, mits de vochtparameters dit toelaten.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Lager kosten.<\/strong> De economische kant is eenvoudig. Biogene CO\u2082 ter plaatse is aanzienlijk goedkoper dan vloeibare CO\u2082 die per tankwagen wordt aangevoerd \u2014 een kostenpost die Marc opviel toen hij de locatie in Lepelstraat voor het eerst bezocht, die destijds afhankelijk was van tankwagenleveringen. Naarmate industri\u00eble CO\u2082 schaarser en duurder wordt, wordt het financi\u00eble argument voor afvang ter plaatse alleen maar sterker.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">CO\u2082-verrijking en opbrengst: het bewijs stapelt zich op<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">De overtuiging van Marc over de impact van CO\u2082 op gewasprestaties is gebaseerd op data, niet op intu\u00eftie. Biomassasensordata van het Trutina-systeem van Gremon Systems toonden een sterkere en snellere toename van droge stof en biomassastapeling in Sirjansland in vergelijking met benchmarkteeltbedrijven. Internationale bezoeken versterkten dit beeld: in Nieuw-Zeeland zagen telers die voorheen hadden gewerkt met CO\u2082-niveaus onder de ambient buitenconcentraties de grootste afzonderlijke opbrengstverbetering door simpelweg de CO\u2082 te verhogen tot buitenconcentraties.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">De conclusie is helder: het verhogen van de CO\u2082-concentratie tot \u2014 en boven \u2014 het omgevingsniveau is een van de meest rendabele ingrepen in de teelt onder glas. Het hebben van een betrouwbare, regelbare bron ter plaatse maakt die ingreep consistent in plaats van afhankelijk van netwercbeschikbaarheid of leverschema's van tankwagens.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Een bewezen model voor telers die overwegen om ter plekke CO\u2082 te produceren<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Het DES-project laat zien wat er haalbaar is wanneer telers een biomassa-warmtebron combineren met Galloxol\u00ae CO\u2082-afvangtechnologie. Het systeem is modulair en kan worden geschaald voor een enkel bedrijf of worden gedeeld door een groep telers met een gemeenschappelijke energiebron.
