De luchtvaart is verantwoordelijk voor bijna 3% van de wereldwijde uitstoot van broeikasgassen. SAF kan de CO\u2082-uitstoot over de gehele levenscyclus echter met 30\u201380% verminderen in vergelijking met conventionele vliegtuigbrandstof, afhankelijk van de grondstof en het productieproces. Daardoor is het een hoeksteen geworden van de sector\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.iata.org\/en\/programs\/environment\/flynetzero\/\">toezegging om tegen 2050 nettosulfaatvrij te zijn \/ toezegging voor netto-nul in 2050<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Toch blijft \u00e9\u00e9n factor vaak onopgemerkt: de kwaliteit van het toevoergas is enorm belangrijk. Veel productieprocessen voor SAF zijn afhankelijk van gassen die uit afval zijn gewonnen, en deze bevatten van nature waterstofsulfide (H\u2082S). Dit leidt tot twee verschillende uitdagingen die gemakkelijk over het hoofd worden gezien.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Waarom H\u2082S de schone SAF-productie bedreigt<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ten eerste vormt H\u2082S een ernstig risico tijdens de productie zelf. Het werkt als een sterk katalysatorgif en zelfs concentraties onder 1 ppm kunnen onomkeerbare schade aanbrengen aan de katalysatoren die SAF-synthese mogelijk maken. Omdat vervanging van de katalysator kostbaar en ontwrichtend is, kan dit risico alleen al de economische levensvatbaarheid van een fabriek ondermijnen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ten tweede brengt H\u2082S de milieubelofte van de brandstof in gevaar. Eventuele zwavelresten worden bij de verbranding omgezet in zwaveldioxide (SO\u2082). Dit is een schadelijke verontreinigende stof die verantwoordelijk is voor zure regen, verslechtering van de luchtkwaliteit en ernstige gezondheidsrisico's voor omringende gemeenschappen.
