Carbon capture for greenhouse horticulture in Europe:
Green Gas & Liquids is bringing carbon capture to greenhouse horticulture in Austria. In 2025, we are installing a Galloxol® CO₂ capture system at Merschl Gartenbau GmbH in Vienna. This is our first project in the country, and the latest addition to a growing European reference base. Once running, the system will supply biogenic CO₂ to 8 hectares of tomato greenhouses. Merschl Gartenbau will no longer depend on external CO₂ supply.

How Galloxol® delivers CO₂ self-sufficiency for greenhouse growers
Greenhouse growers face two challenges at once. They need to cut CO₂ emissions while also securing a reliable, affordable CO₂ supply for crop enrichment. External liquid CO₂ is expensive and often disrupted. CO₂ from CHP units is only available when the engine runs, and quality can vary.
Galloxol® solves both problems together. The technology captures CO₂ directly from flue gases produced by on-site energy sources. These include biomass boilers, CHP units, and geothermal installations. After capture, we purify the CO₂ and make it ready for direct greenhouse use. Growers can also use it for food and beverage applications, dry ice production, or storage.
At Merschl Gartenbau, we will connect the Galloxol® system to the grower’s existing biomass boiler. As a result, CO₂ that would otherwise enter the atmosphere goes straight to the tomato crop instead. The system will be fully running by late 2025.
Why Galloxol® works better than amine-based systems
Most industrial CO₂ capture systems use amine-based chemistry. Engineers originally developed these for the petrochemical sector. They can work at large scale, but they carry drawbacks. Solvent losses cause harmful atmospheric emissions. Maintenance demands are higher. Energy consumption is also significant.
Galloxol® works differently. Managing Director Laleh Hosseini explains: “Our solvent is biodegradable and has zero vapour pressure. There are no solvent losses, so there are no harmful emissions. That makes it a safe option around food crops.” In addition, zero solvent consumption cuts operating costs directly. Furthermore, advanced heat integration keeps external energy input low. Together, these features make Galloxol® well suited to smaller horticultural operations where safety, simplicity, and low running costs matter most.
A proven track record across Europe since 2019
The Merschl Gartenbau project joins a reference base that started in 2019. That year, we commissioned our first Galloxol® installation at DES B.V. in Sirjansland, the Netherlands. Subsequently, we delivered a second Dutch project at Wijnen Crops in Egchel in 2021. In 2022, we completed a full carbon capture system for FNXP LNG in Italy. In the same year, we finished a flue gas preconditioning project for EmsFlower in Germany.
Each project has sharpened our engineering skills. Moreover, we continue to provide maintenance and service support for all installed systems. This ensures strong performance long after commissioning.
The Austrian project is a natural next step. Energy costs stay volatile, and pressure to cut emissions keeps growing across Europe. Consequently, more growers are now looking seriously at producing their own CO₂ on-site. The question is no longer whether on-site capture is feasible. It is how quickly growers can put it in place.
